You have been given simple and complex explanations. All are correct and very good.

Mediocrity is just a big word for being bored, normal, and uninteresting. Snobbery and arrogance is the opposite side of the spectrum. When a person feels invisible to others they can overcompensate by drawing the wrong kind of attention to themselves such as being arrogant or pretending to be smarter than they are or better than other people than they are. At heart..you should just stay true to who you are at the moment, knowing that we all change with life experiences and accept that we all fall short in this thing called Living at some point in our growing up (maturing) process.

it means that people who think highly of themselves are just hiding the fact that they are just average people, no better than anyone else

Some well to do people in the past have acted snobbish so if an ordinary person might wish to appear better than ordinary he/she might act snobbish to deceive others.

It means that those who look down their noses at others and think that they are so superior do it to make themselves feel better about thenselves - they secretly worry that they don't amount to much, so by running other people down they try and raise themselves above those whom they mock. It basically means don't be a snob, don't be big headed because there is always someone who is smarter or richer than you are. (nice pic by the way)

In psychology, snobbery and arrogance are a form of "leveling." This means that the more insecure a person is, the more snobbish and arrogant they are to others to bring them down a few levels and therefore, leveling the playing field. Without the feeling of mediocrity, there would be no need for snobbery and arrogance.

I see this played out all the time on Yahoo Answers.

That is an excellent quote...mind if I plagiarize it? :-)

This means that people with attitude, those who try to show off or act as if they are better than everyone else are doing that just so others won't know just how ordinary they really are.
