"Emo" is short for the word "emotional," but emo people are not quite the same thing as goths. If you poke an emo kid with a stick, he will just stand there, completely motionless, without a care in the world, and then a crow will land on his head to make a new nest. If you poke a goth kid with a stick, he will set the stick on fire with his thoughts.

It means Emotional and Emos cut themselves due to emotional pain in their lives.
Examples: Someone's Death, Getting Dumped, Having a Problem with your Body, and other things that can be sad will cause people to "Go Emo". Hope this helps!
