We weren't at home at that time and my dog was just a month away from her 1st birthday. If it helps my dog was fully trained and knew how to walk on a leash(haven't tried walking her without a leash).

I think it was a total accident. Don't blame yourself....Now he's in a better place....doggy heaven! I'm sure he will be very happy. Good Luck to you and I'm so sorry for your loss.
P.S.- Maybe you could try getting another puppy?
P.P.S.- If you convince yourself not to blame your Aunt then maybe you should talk to her and explain to her that it wasn't her fault.
Good Luck!

No doubt it was an accident. I am so sorry for your loss. It was not your fault, just an unfortunate consequence.

It sounds like an accident. Your aunt did not intentionally let the dog out to go into the street. The fact that your aunt blames herself, just means she's a decent person. I would be more worried if she did not feel bad about it.

As hard as it is - forgive your aunt. Hopefully she will be able to forgive herself.

Of course it was an accident. And yet I know it is very hard to not in ward feel it was her fault. And a part of grieving is anger. You will need to work your way through the emotions until you reach the acceptance stage and can let it go. My sympathy over your loss. You will get through this.

aww darling hope everything goes well, according to your evidence your Aunt should not be blamed for the incident it was itself an accident, don't blame your Aunt but also make sure to not blame yourself your dog was precious to you and now he/she is lost he/she will always be with you at heart

It's a terrible thing Rafi, to lose a pal like a dog. There is nothing I can say to relieve the pain of your loss. But Rafi, it wasn't your Aunt's fault. What if it was you, and you put your dog in the backyard , and this happened? It was an accident, and a misfortunate one. Your Aunt obviously loves you, and needs you! It's plain to see from what you have told us, that she feels deeply about this, and needs to hear, from you, that you forgive her, and that you realize it was an accident. What would you do if the situation were reversed?
