Location, price, do they offer child care (since I have a 5 year old), and hours. Also, the sales pitch of the person I speak to. I went to one gym within the last month and felt like I was buying a car. When I told her I wasn't ready to make a decision on the spot she went to get her manager. Based on that alone I opted not to join. Also, what committment do they require, some want you to sign up for a year in advance, I want month to month. I joined the YMCA and I couldn't be happier.

First impressions are always important, if you have one in mind (I highly recommend Golds "They Rock") just go take a visit. They should be friendly willing to show you around and answer all your questions bottom line. You are the customer if it wasn't for you they would be out of business, so they should go out of there way to make you feel comfortable (which Golds does :) When you go you should bring your gym clothes because they should let you try out a day for free. So you can actually have a feel for the place before you commit to any contracts. Once you do find the one you like read your contract carefully and make sure everything they told you is in the contract it's your money !

First there should be knowledgeable instructor then look for the ambiance. Is ther enough room for exercise? Is the ventilation good? Are there joyous people arround? You should be enjoying the workout with other people to keep you interested and less tired.

Most gyms offer about the same thing when all is said and done.

The big question is: will you go there regularly?

Factors in this would include, but are not limited to:
- parking
- machine availability (often, your best time is their busiest time!)
- close to home or work
- friendly, helpful people
- nice facilities (showers, etc.)

90% of this is the gut feeling you get when visiting.

A gym may be dirt cheap, etc.- but if you are uncomfortable going there, you just plain won't.

I like a place that has an indoor pool and water aerobics classes. And no, I'm not 60 - I've loved water aerobics since I turned about 20!

My last gym had an indoor rock climbing wall, which was awesome. Find a place that will offer a free week and maybe a training session. See how crowded it is at the times of days you will want to be there. Make sure they aren't always pushing supplements at you.

I tend to stay away from gyms that offer tanning because it is so harmful. I figure if they advocate that, they can't really know about being healthy.

Location, price, do they offer classes (pilates, yoga, spinning). Tanning is a plus also for me since I do it anyways, might as well do both in the same building.
