Atheists: Do you think Christians just go to church to hear rhetoric and dogma all day?

Christians: Do you feel like there's too much insubstantial and badly thought out rhetoric and dogma being said in church?

i'm not trying to state a fact or make an offensive or sugercoated suggestion. I am just wondering what people think because

1. Sometimes i feel that atheists kind of assume we just get brainwashed in church, while i find the sermons quite enlightening

2. Some slogans/sayings i think i are overused, and i was wondering if anyone else feels like that.

Yes, I have been to several churches and have not found one suiting to me. I like to read the Bible. Thank you for wording it in such a way that it is non-offensive. Kudos.

As a Catholic Christian, I will answer the second question as it relates to the Catholic Church.

Do you feel like there's too much insubstantial and badly thought out rhetoric and dogma being said in church?

No.

3,000 years of Jewish rhetoric and dogma followed by 2,000 year of Catholic Christian rhetoric and dogma is very substantial and has been well thought out by the most intelligent and spiritual people of each generation.

With love in Christ.

Atheist: No, I don't think so.
I think there are different types of believers:
* Those who honestly believe in their religion and God and go to Church to be with others that they perceive like them, to hear things they like and accept, and to show their respect and acceptance of their God and his laws.
* Those who go to Church even when they don't agree with all the teachings and sayings. They go to Church "just in case" and because they don't want to accept or face that they don't agree with all of that is said there.
* Those who are brain-washed and just repeat and do what they were told, don't love or accept or anything, just FOLLOW.
* Those who may disagree, but accept most of what their religion says. And because their families, friends and community belong to the same Church.
* Those who go to Church, say they believe and then act against most of all teaching: they steal, or lie, or are selfish, etc.

i'm not sure what rhetoric and dogma means, (i'm only 13, there's a lot of words I don't know), but if "too much insubstantial and badly thought out rhetoric and dogma" means something bad, there's not any of that at all. at least not in my church. my favorite pastors are Pastor Rob, my youth pastor, and Pastor Mark, the head pastor of the church. they both do really good sermons and that's what brings people to our church and makes it bigger. so my answer to your question would be, no, not at all.

If you believe preaching the Bible is too much dogma, etc., go to a church which the Bible is the least of their doctrine and entertainment is the focus of the services. As for me....I need spiritual truth to enlighten my spiritual life. Give me the old ways. A Bible believing, preaching church.

i think Athiests go to church to either just hear what poeple believe and try to find a answer to beileve that makes sense.
or... they were forced to go out of obligation...
like:
(if its a youngin)
"Timmy come on, were going to be late! [him/her] fine! comming..." as he walks away "freaking, ___face bull god" he mutters under his breath. [mom/dad]"WHAT DID YOU SAY???" [him/her]"i said god is good!"

or to make someone feel good about you.
like a lame term like this:
"Oh that was so boring... well at least it was worth the cookie credits..."

My pastor is very thoughtful, but some stuff I've heard in the past has just been downright painful. I don't go to church for rhetoric.

When I was a theist member I would have agreed with you whole heartedly, but as an Atheist I am happy in my place and I don't think about all of that and I guess that people that like to be in that kinda atmosphere like it.
