Hartz medicines absolutely suck. They've poisoned so many pets you can find the lawsuits all over the place online.
Go to your regular vet, get Advantage. One drop on the back of the neck and your fleas are dead, most in a few hours, the stragglers by the end of 36 hours. None come back for 6 weeks.
Vaccuuming does help. There was a huge news article about how 95% of the fleas vaccumed up died in the process, so it does act as an efficient flea killer.

Yup, Hartz doesn't work and has in fact killed a fair few cats. The same can be said for most store-bought flea treatments. Bathing doesn't get rid of fleas in cats or dogs. Your cats are trying to tell you this by fighting and clawing when you bath them - no need to bath cats!!
Just pick up some proper flea treatment from a vets that's actually going to work, i.e Frontline, Advantage, Revolution or Advocate. If you've bathed the cats you have to wait 48 hours before you can apply any of these or they won't work properly - you could get a capstar for each of them if you like in the mean time. You can also get a proper spray for your house from a vets. Just don't use any more store-bought stuff, they're not licensed to sell the appropriate chemicals in stores.

I was horrified to hear about what had happened your cats. I have never heard of Hartz, but I have been avoiding all chemical products since I discovered that I am allergic to artificial chemicals and additives. When my new cat started to get fleas a few weeks ago, I asked a friend of mine for her advice as she is really into herbal and natural remedies. I was amazed to hear that her cats, dogs, goats etc. never get fleas, ticks and worms. She said that she gives her pets Brewers yeast every week in their food. I have started trying it now and my cat is already starting to do well on it. She also feeds her cats and dogs raw food so as to avoid all the artificial stuff that producers put in. Hope this helps to keep your remaining cat and any future friends in good health. Almost forgot to mention that I have seen her cats, and that they are very healthy looking with fantastic coats.

The safest and cheapest method of getting rid of fleas is to use a mixture of boric acid and salt. The powder should be sprayed on bedding, carpets and other areas frequented by your pets.

None of the over the counter meds like Hartz, any flea collar or the powders, ever work. They're all a huge waste of money and can make your pets sick. You're going to have to get something like Advantage, Frontline or similar, to get rid of the fleas once and for all. It'll be cheaper in the long run as it will actually work the first time (you won't spend tons of money on 50 different cheaper things that don't do a darn thing, and you won't have to worry nearly as much about your pet having a horrible reaction and having to be rushed to an emergency vet).

I bought the flea collar Frontline Plus for Cats at Petsmart and the fleas were gone in 24 hours. You can check this by putting a white paper towel on the floor, putting your cat on top and rubbing his fur back and forth. The fleas will fall off either dead (yay!) or alive.

Hartz never worked for me either. Try Frontline...you put it in between their shoulders like the Hartz. It's pricey and you can only get it from a vet or through that PetMeds mail thingy, but it works great! Also Raid has a great flea and egg killer spray in a purple can. Another trick is to put a baking dish with a little bit of dish soap and water in it, set it in the middle of a floor at night with a small like reading or desk lamp shining on it. The fleas are drawn to the warmth of the light, jump in and out of the water but the soap breaks down whatever it is that helps them jump. Good luck!

You really should bite the bullet and spend the money for Advantage. To save money I buy the large Dog version and use a small plastic syringe .. 0.3 ml per cat. Very small amount so the cost savings is worth the hassle.
