It's sometimes an act of kindness. I say Thank You when I know it's well intentioned.
Other times, it means "I want you to think as I think or else!" In those cases, I laugh and say the prayer threats have never worked.

Mt 26:41
41
"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
Act 9:17
7Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

It really depends on their true intentions. Sometimes I would rather they do not, considering who they are and what they intend. Other times it's perfectly fine, let's face it we can all use all the help we can get.
Many of us consider this the only true black magick, when you pray to deter someone's free will. Just consider the person asking and why they are asking.

I never thought of it as a negative until I read some of these responses. I suppose it could be meant to be an insult, said out of frustration with someone who is closed minded to what another shares with them. I don't think that's the norm though. Praying people make it a habit to include others in their prayers, and I think for the most part, are just expressing they have sincere concern for you. People pray(or talk) to God about everything. They petition Him to intervene and help in all sorts of situations. God says "you have not, because you ask not". It is believed that we can even change His mind about some things if we appeal to Him in earnest. Christians don't always tell you they will pray for you, but they do. Maybe it's because you might be offended if they told you. But, when they do say it, I'm sure in most cases they are sincerely concerned about your situation and are thinking it will bring you some small comfort to know they care. It really is a good thing and not meant to offend.

Please tell me what is a religious person?
If you mean a Christian then I would like to say this. I do not say this for why would I cast my pearls to swine, for they will just tramp it underfoot....like you are doing. I rather pray for them at home in my bedroom, and then seek ways to bring them into the kingdom of God. If they still refuse then I leave them and proceed onto another person. True Christians have been given the power to remit the sins of sinful people. If they do not want to listen then they will remain in this sinful state and in the end be cast into the Hell fires. We don't want this to happen, that is why we carry on loving them with the love of Christ.

Apparently you really don't want an answer to such an obvious question, you want to provide a forum for people to rag on "religious people", however, I will answer it for you.
Obviously they are going to pray to whomever/whatever their Diety is and ask them to help you with whatever your problems are, and they do it because they want to help you.
Have a nice day, and Buddha Bless!

It usually means they care. That they want only God's best for you. But if you're offended, don't be, please.

"I will pray for you" Means i love you and i will ask God to help you. We should all pray for each other. God is the one that can help up in times of need. We might feel that we cannot make it through a certain situation. Thats when a man/woman of God can come in and pray to God to help you in your situation.
