If I ask if a Christian is a sinner, I will get answers which say, "Yes, I'm not perfect, just forgiven," and, "Yes, I still sin or slip up, but my sins are forgiven by Jesus."

Then, if I ask if some infamous or generally disliked person was or is a Christian, I'll immediately get answers that, "No, he might have said he was a Christian, but he wasn't a "true" Christian!"

So, let me get this straight. A Christian is still a sinner, but only if they don't commit the sins other Christians personally dislike the most. Is that about right?

The only One Who can say for sure who is a "real" Christian is the good Lord Himself. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt -- if they say they're Christians, it ain't my call to say that they aren't.

However, there *is* this little matter of actions speaking louder than words. I may not have the right to judge someone else, but a little quiet speculation to myself isn't verboten.

right this is the difficulty: The Bible right this is why the bible motives separation a million. Too many followers do no longer certainly examine the bible in the 1st place 2. The Bible is extremely imprecise and not sparkling on many aspects 3. The continuity between the books is lacking; probable with the aid of fact the Bible strengthen into written via approximately 40 men of quite a few backgrounds over the direction of 1500 years 4. the style you certainly strengthen right into a christian seems to be up for grabs.... is it via faith on my own, or via faith and baptism 5. Its hard to narrate modern-day subject concerns to biblical cases so each and every church takes their own stand. quote, Mark Twain "no longer something makes an atheist swifter than a stable examining of the Bible"

No, We are suppose to apply what we learn, to be doers of the word and not hearers only. However, when a person goes to God they do not become Billy Graham or Joyce Meyers over night and no body seems to understand that. They think Christians should be walking on water and that just doesn't happen. What Christians do or should be doing is working on renewing their mind and when you have done some of the low life things I personally was taught to do, renewing your messed up mind isn't anywhere near an easy task.

Well any way Take care and Happy New Year.

Technically if they believe in Jesus they are a Christian, no matter what they do or say. Or how they act.

However, from what I can tell from my location in the Bible Belt, you pretty much summed it up.

A Christian will not live a LIFESTYLE of sin. They will not be constantly committing willful sin, they might mess up now and then... but they will be sorry and repent.

In the end, what determines if a person is a Christian or not, is if they have yielded their life to Jesus Christ, and have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Generally speaking, if a person is sinning often enough to be "infamous" they are probably have not yielded their lives to the Lord, and most likely do not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Even if at times WE can't be sure, God knows and there is no way to fool Him.

You are nearly there :-)
We will be sinful in the flesh until we die, but God has provided a way for us to become sinless and righteous in His sight, just like the Israelites on the Day of Atonement in the OT.
I ask more or less the same Q, 'Are you a believer but with still with sin in your heart?' Most of them if they are honest will say Yes, but I pray for forgiveness everyday for my sins. How can this be I say? If Jesus took all our sins away, then why are you doing prayers of repentance? If you do this then you are making Him a liar, and asking Him to come down from Heaven and do this whole atonement thing over and over again...that is absurd! But sadly many do this, because they have never met the original gospel of the water and the Spirit (John 3:5).
Would you like to meet the very gospel God gave us? Then contact me and I can lead you to it.

yes, that is one of the frustrating aspects of Christianity. people are allowed to mess up -- often seriously and repeatedly -- and feel OK about it because only God can judge us, and confessing our sins is supposed to absolve us.

you'd think that the real challenge is to avoid messing up in the first place, so there's nothing to forgive or be absolved of. but then we'd be too perfect to be Christians, I guess.

it's quite a quandrum
