I'm traveling from Los Angeles to Idaho Falls but I hear there are new restrictions on things you can take. Can I take toothpaste, hand cream, hair gel, and things like that? How about aerosol cans?

Look at: www.tsa.gov for the answers to all your questions. There is a prohibited items list there and tips on what is o.k. and what is not.

you can bring all those items but you have to put them in your check-in luggage and not in carry-on luggage. but if you really need to have some of those items in you carry-on, make sure any item container will not exceed 100ml. and put it on a 1liter clear plastic bag. if you follow these instructions you will not have any problem with TSA personnel.

Toothpaste, hand cream, hair gel...

1. Each of them in containers no larger than 3 ounce or 85mL
NOT ALLOWED if you have a 300mL container, but you used most of the contents, i.e. you have 50mL left

2. All of above placed in a CLEAR plastic bag no bigger than 1 quart-sized (1.136 liters).

3. One Bag per person

***Declare ALL larger liquids

Aerosols...

Aerosols that are personal medicinal and toilet items are items you spray on your body. These can be carried on board (A SUBJECT to the rules above).

Other Aerosols are not allowed

If you are taking things on board the lane in your carry on baggage then it must be less than 3 oz. If you are putting it in your check in baggage then you can have larger amounts. I usually have sample sizes in the carry on baggage and everything else in my regular baggage. These restrictions aren't new, they have been in place for awhile.
