Just wondering. Because if we can, I'm gonna start an atheist "megachurch" and have a gym (but call it a "family life center", of course) with membership fees (but call them "love offerings", of course) and cash in, too!

Seriously, how far do they want to take this "atheism is a religion" idea?

Atheism is just an argument for reason. Kids who don't believe in Santa Claus anymore haven't formed a religion, they're just more grown up.

Atheism is not a religion, but is still protected under the First Amendment. Many people seem to mistaken that the Freedom of Religion means only freedom to follow a religion without the gov't stepping in. It also covers following no religion at all. And atheist organizations already get tax-exemption. All one has to do is apply for it. And that is the same with military symbols. You have to apply for the symbol to be recognized.

Starting an atheist church would not work - what are we going to scare the people with? As far as paradise? we could promise them virgins but where are we going to find 72 of them?

No. Atheism cannot be called a religion. It does not have the elements that religions have, such as: prayer, ritual, religious law, ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, mythology, faith, mystic experience, etc.

Calling atheism a religion means redefining the term "religion" altogether. What for?

I would like to have a tax id number, just because I'm an Atheist. That would really make my day a bit brighter.

Until they find a new default position.

David R, I am a member of the ACLU. We have a pastor on our board of directors, and most of the board are Christians. It's sad you have been brainwashed into thinking we are anti-religion when we are pro-Constitution.

My mother is a Christian who regularly donates to Planned Parenthood.

The ACLU thinks so.

Corrosion EAC:

It is not brainwashing. I have first-hand experience observing in South Florida ACLU advocates support corrupt and antisocial movements. That you are a member simply makes me doubt your judgment and morals.
