You can use RID or a natural treatment like with coconut oil.

From a website:
Managing head lice or nits

Head Lice can be eradicated from hair with coconut oil using the following method:

1st treatment

If lice are visible in the hair permeate the hair with approximately 5mls of melted coconut oil rubbing it into the roots before bedtime. Place a towel on the pillow and the next morning shampoo the hair. By this time all the live nits will have been suffocated and all the eggs will have absorbed oil and become soft and soggy.

Following treatments:

Part the hair down the middle then dip your finger in melted coconut oil and dab a few drops of oil down the part on the scalp and one or two drops in the roots above the ears. After 12 hours the drops of oil will have spread through the hair and any new nits that may have hatched will find it unbearable. This treatment only needs to be carried out once every two or three days. The nit incubation cycle is about 17 days so treatment may be kept up for about 3 weeks to ensure any newly hatched nits will also die. As coconut oil is a natural good smelling hair oil the oil conditions the hair as well as displacing the nits.

RID is the lice treatment. RIT is a brand of dye.) Follow the instructions, which involve putting the shampoo on and leaving it for a while, then combing the hair with a very fine-toothed comb, probably provided.

In the meantime, do not share hats or scarves or hair care items, and wash linens and clothing likely to have been in contact with her head. If you can not launder coats, stuffed animals, etc., put them into a bag and leave them there for a period of time that will allow any nits (eggs) to hatch and die. There is a readily available spray you can use on the stuff and on furniture, if you need to.

a home treatment is baby oil it will suffocate those critters and you can comb them out then was as usual make sure you and all of her stuff is washed as well and if it can't be washed put it in a bag for 72 hours to kill the bug.Anybody she has been around needs to be told so they can check to, and make sure you vacuum very well and then check her in a week and you may have to do it again. when my child was young I would not use that harmful Rid on her I went to a health food store and got this stuff that was basically baby oil.It does work.

There are several good over the counter remedies. You don't need to shave y our head. RIT is a good one. Ask the pharmacist if you're not sure.

You can get a product called NIX at Wal-mart, use this, then dip a fine-toothed comb into vinegar & comb hair vigorously to remove the eggs.
