If you feel it is not the typical hairball I would take the cat to the vet. The coughing could be stimulating the cat to vomit, or the vomiting could sound like the cat is trying to cough up something. Definitely see the vet if there is any blood in the vomit or if the cat has diarhea along with the vomiting. These could be signs of a serious condition that needs medical attention.

Get some hairball treatment. It comes in a tube and give it to him as directed on the label. My cat has that problem every now and then. I give her the medicine and shes fine again.

It might be hairballs. Or it might be that your cat has a sensitive stomach. There are foods on the market for something like that, or you can try feeding him small portions so he can't eat himself sick.
If the change of food doesn't help, take him to the doctor and find out what's going on.
Good luck.

Go to your vet. Has he had simple hair balls? It sounds like it may be worse.
