Do dogs know when they wag their tails?

Sorry kind of random :] But do dog like know when they wag their tails, or is it like a reaction? Dose it just happen automaticly or do they do it them selfs like on purpose?

i saw on a show called "dog genius" that a dogs tail wagging is like a human smiling, so it's just instinct i'd say.

the show said, like a human face, we show happiness more on the right side of our face, and anger/sadness more on our left (though we're not aware of that, we are aware of smiling and frowning). a dog is like that too, with their tails, when happy they wag to the right angle slightly more, when they are scared or aggression wagging, it's more to the left. because in a human brain, fear is controlled by the right hemisphere, and happiness by the left, and it's manifested opposite on our face. (ok the show explained this much better than i can so i'm sorry if this is confusing)

this happens when they r excited and or happy for something or someone and if ure wondering y ure dog would wag its tail when u come into a room its probably cus its so happy to see yu (thts if u hav a dog)

My dog doesn't have a tail. I have watched my foster dog wag her tail in my other dog's face when he is being a pill. It sure looks like a deliberate whap, whap whap in the face.

I have watched my cat do the same thing and she knows exactly what she is doing.
