Here is a link to the Cat Fanciers' Association website, and some more information about the different breeds of cat: http://www.cfainc.org/breeds.html
By the way, there has been some misinformation given by some who answered - tabby, tuxedo, calico, and tortoiseshell are coat patterns, not breeds. It's kinda like trying to tell someone that a brindle is a breed of dog, when it is in fact a coat pattern that several breeds can have.

canines have been domesticated for quite a few thousand years. as quickly as people found out how sensible a tame wolf would desire to be, they began breeding for various features. Cats have purely been domesticated for some thousand years. There are some breeds whose head shape or physique shape is particularly distinctive than others, yet they have nowhere close to as a lot version as a Chihuahua vs. an Irish Wolfhound. My opinion is that people found out extraordinarily rapid that cats are purely stable for 2 issues: mousing and companionship. they might't be knowledgeable to herd sheep, hunt gophers, supply risk-free practices, and so on. So there is not any evaluate breeding a cat that sounds like a Dachshund with the aid of fact the cat is in no way going to be going after badgers.

You can't be that ignorant!!! Of course there are many different breeds. I raised Himalayans to grand championship and they were made from Persians and Siamese to give the long hair with points of color. There are breeds without any hair, curly hair breeds, ears that flop over breeds, Siamese with beautiful long bodies and special talk, Bengals and others that look like jungle cats, cats that jump high and others who sit and look lovely. All cats are wonderful and you would be doing a godly good deed to adopt a stray from a foster home because there are so many cats, old and young, who need homes. Also, mixed blood cats are usually healthier and stronger and are all so wonderful that you cannot go wrong. Do the right thing.
