Hello, all:
As we count down the last hours of 2007 (at least in my part of the world), I was wondering what you consider to be the most significant religious event of 2007? It could be a personal event, a national event, or international event -- or you could describe one personal event and one wider-ranging event.
For me, the personal event was the decision by my full moon group to form an "inner court" for more advanced Wiccan study, with the goal of forming our own Tradition after a year and a day. In Wiccan terms, this is a bit like building a church. :-) The national event was the decision of the VA to allow Wiccan pentacles to be carved into the headstones of soldiers who have died in the line of duty.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to respond.

Oh, and of course now I realize that I should have said religious and/or spiritual event, since some folks do not affiliate with a specific religion, or are agnostics or atheists. Apologies all round.

For me it was speaking in tongues on October 16th. It was a big thing for me because I was so long a skeptic of it, but because it's such a big part of the church I go to, I started researching and praying about it.
Happy 2008!

Mine was interesting... for me, anyway :P I was really high strung till August this year, then I broke my ankle. It was a nasty break, too, nerve damage, surgery, and even now, I still have to lean heavily on my cane. I was bedridden for 6 weeks. Thing is... that gave me time where I had to sit still and do Nothing. I couldn't go around, couldn't get a job, clean the house, etc etc... but I could think. So as unpleasant (and very!) it was to break my ankle, it allowed me several months now to spend a considerable amount of my time in research, in thought, in meditation.
And, we moved from the US to Canada! Yay, no more Bush! I feel much better without worrying about idiotic politics.

on a personal level i had many significant events. at the midsummer festival i was accepted as a full member of my pagan 'church', and three of my dear friends were knighted into the service of the community. then i went to my very first pagan spirit gathering, which was amazing. and at samhain, three friends and i travelled to circle sanctuary, which was such an amazing binding experience for us that ended in tragedy as we learned in the middle of main ritual that one of the ladies' husbands died that day.
on a national level, i have to agree about the v.a. relenting on the pentacle.
internationally, i think the pope's declaration that the catholic church was the only true church pretty much characterized 2007, which was a tragic year in spite of some personal milestones.

Personal.
My dad died this summer.
I am atheist. At the cremation the priest said that 'we are separated by dead'. I felt that it was like a fog that was between here and where my father was . Just for some moments.

Another year of denial about global warming. Another year when my country refused to sign the Kyoto Accord. Another year closer to a planetary Easter Island :(

I don't really recall having a particular religious event that was significant to me. One thing that is significant to me is going back to school at the community college.
