Make a point of writing a short note to everyone, saying thank you for their thoughts and prayers and support during a difficult time. Mention anything specific that people did. People understand that you may not be in a frame of mind to handle things well and won't expect you to be fancy. Just speak and write from your heart.

Thank You For Sympathy Cards

2016-11-16 11:12:18 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Although they are not used as routinely as they were years ago, there are formal printed sympathy acknowledgment cards available for purchase. Another option is simply to use plain cards or stationary, which is what I've used in the past.

Whichever you choose to send, they will be appreciated.

Just say thank you for thinking of me in my time of need! Everyone needs to feel thought of and those feelings go a long way. It is just the kind words that really carry us through it all. God bless you!!!

thank you card

I sent out thank you notes to people that showed up for both a visitation or a funeral when both of my parents died. Many people were kind enough to leave their full address in the register when each one of my parents passed away. If a person sent flowers, a donation to a charity, or someone did something really special for either of their funerals, such as sing a solo, make a rememberance speech, played an instrument at the service, or performed the eulogy, then I sent them a thank you card. I also sent a thank you note to the funeral homes because they were so helpful in my time of loss and grief as well as to anyone that was nice enough to bother to take time out of their day and they showed up in an effort to comfort me. It is always really helpful when people left their full address when they sign the Visitation Book for me to send them an acknowledgment or word of thanks. Sometimes, you can get an address from someone at the funeral, if a particular person did not leave their address, or if you know which county and state they live in, you can find their address in their County Housing Records. People that live in houses are almost always listed in a county housing administration website. For example, if you live in North Carolina, but you want to see what city/county someone lives in, you can do a google search and you can usually find what information you need in order to send a note of thanks.

However, when someone sends you a sympathy card, it isn't necessary or required etiquette that you send out thank you notes; you certainly can if wish to do so, but when someone sends you a sympathy card, most of them do not expect a response back. These people are merely trying to express their concern, that they want to tell you how sorry they are for your loss, or is simply trying to comfort you to let you know that someone happens to care about your well-being over losing someone. But if you are feeling up-to-it right now to send acknowledgements to people that sent you sympathy cards, I think it is very admirable and considerate of you.

However, if you wish to do this, it isn't required for you to say any more than 'Thank you for your concern and for the card you sent me during my time of grief. I really appreciate your remembering me and for your best wishes. It meant a lot to me.' Depending on how close you are to a person you can sign the card either with 'Sincerely' or if you are super close to a person, then you can sign it 'Love' or 'XOXO' and then your name.

not sure if you're supposed to thank people for sympathy cards. I didn't when my mother died.
