Is this some kind of hip new term for boyfriend?
I've never heard of it before.

Is it, perhaps, a corruption of 'beau'?

And, YES, I'm 16 and I think it sounds retarded!! I'd rather just call the person my boyfriend =)

But I believe it means boyfriend OR girlfriend, depends on who says it.

yeah, you are right. it's just another way of saying boyfriend or girlfriend.
And yes,i think it's just a slanger version of saying beau.

Yes, you're right about it. But it is used so often now, that guys use it to girls all the time. I'll admit I freaked when a guy started calling me that though, but my friends assured me it wasn't a big deal lol.

It is basically a pet name, but it is hardly new. I think I heard of it back in the mid to late 90's. But I think it did come from the word "beau"

Usually people who have a companion they refer to them as "boo" For exsample "come here boo" it means the same thing as darling, sweety, ect..
