I always see on the commercials the Marines in their dress blues and the front guy always has a saber. Are the sabers only given to commissioned officers like in the olden days, or do they give every Marine on graduation day a saber? I would totally love a saber, I love swords and everything. That would be a great perk of becoming a Marine.

I still haven't been able to meet with a recruiter yet, what with the holidays, their office has been closed for quite some time now.

I do exceptionally well in school and in college and I have no doubt that I could pass all those ROTC classes with flying colors, but I don't think I'm a born leader, so that's why I'm not considering going to officer school or whatever it is.

Sure, some people will say that I'm nuts and I should just go to medical school or something, but that's not the life for me, at least not right now, and I'd rather get out there and fight, even if people will call me a grunt, because I want to get into infantry. Let those chickenhawks spew all their hatred they want, no skin off my back.

NCO's and Officers rate swords as well as the blood stripe (red stripe) that runs down the trouser leg of the dress blues

And it is not a E-2 like the other person said it is a CPL (E-4) which is the rank you become a NCO.

NCO's & Staff NCO's Carry a different sword than the officers do.

The link below will tell you about the history of the swords the 1st link is the officer's sword and second in NCO's

If you read the following paragraph you will see that only officers and NCO's carry swords and wear the blood stripe not E-2's

The Blue Dress uniform, often seen in recruiting advertisements, is also often called "Dress Blues" or simply "Blues". It is equivalent in composition and use to black tie, worn at ceremonial events. It consists of a long-sleeved midnight blue coat with a standing collar, white barracks cover, plain white shirt, sky blue trousers with tan web belt or suspenders, white gloves, and black shoes and socks. The uniform may also be worn with a khaki long- or short-sleeved shirt in place of the coat. Officers have the option of wearing a Sam Browne belt and the Mameluke sword, and Noncommissioned Officers may wear the NCO sword, as prescribed. NCOs, SNCOs, and Officers wear a blood stripe on their trousers.

ADDITION: There are officers in infantry units, so why would you not become an officer if you could. you still get to fight. Check the KIA list of the Iraq war you will see COL.'s on the list of people who have been killed.

By the way know what you are getting into and nake sure it is what you really want. for me it really was and still is but I was shot in Iraq (4 times) and can no longer serve.

First of all it is not a saber, it is a sword. Now in the Marine Corps there are two different swords. The Commisioned-Officers sword is the Marmaluke Hilted Sword like LT. Presely O'Bannon recieved during the war against the Barbary Pirates. The second sword is the Non-Comissioned Officers Sword. That one is carried by Corporals to Sergeants Major. The day before Graduation Day for enisted personel is called Visitors Thursday and that is when the new Marines recieve the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. Once you reach Corporal you get to carry the NCO-Sword and if you want one for yourself you have to buy it.

You have to buy your own sword and you can't own one until you become at least an E-2 which is also when you get your blood stripe down your trousers.
