My TV only goes up to 1080i as well as 720p but not 1080p. My tv does not supports HDMI but it is HD so it has component cable jacks. Anyway I just purchased a component cable last week and i was wondering which resolution is better for my tv and the ps3 720p or 1080i?

Do you know what the native resolution of your TV is? Is it a 720p HDTV by any chance? Since it doesn't have an HDMI port I think that's likely.

So that being said, you should use your PS3 on 720p, as your TV displays that resolution best. If your TV receives a 1080i signal, it converts it down to 720p to show it on your TV.

They are both wrong. 1080i (interlaced) means that every other horizontal line is refreshed at the same time. 720p (progressive) means that every horizontal line is refreshed simultaneously. 1080i generally looks better when watching movies or slowmoving frames. 720p is better for fast motion, like action and sports. Playstation 3 games prefer to be played at 720p or 1080p, rarely 1080i. Resolutions in order (worst to best): 480i, 480p, 1080i, 720p and 1080p.
