Distortion or overdrive are definitely used for shredding. Also with some blues too.

Maybe a volume pedal and a chorus pedal too.

See if you can go to the guitar store and try some pedals out. The guitar center by me has a bunch set up to try. Use what sounds best to you.

Digitec, zoom and boss make some nice multi effect pedals too. Check out musiciansfriend.com to see what's out there.

A good pedal for "shredding", I would say would be the Digitech Whammy (IV is the recent one, but anyone of them will do). It's how a lot of guitarists get the high-pitch sound in their solos. It basically just digitally alters the pitch, either higher or lower. So you can make it sound like a bass (Seven Nation Army, The White Stripes) or like you're playing at the 36th fret (think Rage Against the Machine, The White Stripes, Steve Vai, and a bunch of metal guitarists use it too)

For blues, I would recommend not using a lot of effects, just maybe medium gain or distortion, all the knobs at 12 'clock. Or nothing. It's mostly in the guitar and tuning that makes it sound bluesy. Like a Resonator in an Open Tuning --Open G is probably best-- would be perfect for slide, a Gibson Les Paul for harder Blues-Rock, like Jimmy Page.

None at all . A good Bluesman only needs his Guitar and a good tube amp .

Some people will tell you that NO EFFECTS is the ONLY way to go for blues. I say Jimi Hendrix blew that concept out the door forever.

As long as what you are doing fits the song, ANY effect could theoretically be used. As there are some incredibly inventive effects pedals available now, it would be a lot of fun to experiment. The wah-wah pedal is certainly one of them, but a volume pedal, a chorus, a flanger, an echo or delay... ANYTHING that serves the music could be used - listen to Jimi Hendrix - he was a master at using effects - he would loved to have used some of the cool stuff that is available now that didn't even exist a few years ago.

one of the best multi effect pedal processors out there, is the line 6 pod........personally the floor pod are the best and you can have a variety of effects at your disposal.......they are reasonably priced....go to www.musiciansfriend.com and check some of them out. Line 6 also makes the spider amps which I own.........I have the 120 watt amp which is incredible and has a ton of effects built in.
