In terms of style, don't buy something that is so suitable for a teen that you can't enjoy it for a long time. Stick with classic design, simple lines, and such when choosing furniture. You can follow your age-related trends using things like throw pillows, bedding, etc. Think of furniture like a well made tailored suit. You invest in something you can use for years. Accessorize with trendy jewelry.

Don't worry what other people think of your tastes. If you want to mix wood tones, such as cherry with oak, or pine, or maple, do so. If you love any two pieces you can find a way to make them work together, that is what eclectic design is all about. In fact with well made furniture quality alone helps different styles of pieces match...two things that are both the best of something but have little in common otherwise.

If you don't want to go eclectic, then stick with cherry finishes, solid wood is higher quality but there is also laminates and cherry colored stains used with other type of wood.

Re: your Dillard's card, you may be able to sell it online for face value and use the cash somewhere that has things more to your taste. Or swap cards with your friends who got cards too. You may end up with more options that way.

Can't give you very specific advice. I hope this widens your scope of thinking a bit.

You don't mention your color preferences so it is hard to help you.
My suggestion is to figure out what kind of feeling you want in the room. Are you a girly girl or more tailored?

If you get a reversible duvet you immediately have two different looks.

Also you can control the drama by keeping the number of pillows down.

Here are two I like, the first is very feminine the second is more tailored but fun.
