It's not possible to get a marriage certificate in states that don't allow it. Sure a gay couple could get a church to "marry" them, but the state wouldn't recognize it and for legal purposes they would both be single.

It would be the same "punishment" for any couple who gets married without a license, they are not legally married.

People are looking at this all wrong, we don't need more government action to "legalize" gay marriage. We need Less government, we don't need the government to tell us who can and who can not get married.

The government should not be allowed to issue marriage licenses.

This solves everything.
