I have noticed on other places on the internet many, many, many complaints about the 02 Altima having to have the engine replaced, the pre-cat and cat converter replaced, and blown head gaskets all within 70,000 to 80,000 mile mark. I just had to get the head gasket replaced in my 02 Altima (to the tune of $1600). Is this a design flaw with the engine or what? The Nissan dealership won't give me solid answers (they seem to dance around this problem) and Nissan comsumer affairs is pretty much useless. I take good care of my car, bring it in for all the maintenance checks. It just bothers me that after 70,000 miles the cat converter went "kaputs" as did the head gasket...to be honest..I want to sell this car and run for the hills. Is there anyone else who has had these problems? Are there any Nissan Tech out there who will give me the truth about why this is occuring with so many 02 Altimas and how to completly, totally get this problem taken care of?

the 2002 altima was the first year of that style and that is why it has so many problems but that would not explain why the cat went up so early, my brother has a 01 camry and his cat just went up at 127,000. and a couple of other problems with the 02 sensors. but you could go to the nissan dealer and they can tell you some stuff if you ask the service people. good luck!!!

First year cars have some problems. Your car should have had the engine replaced when the cat converter broke apart. Two head gaskets? many times the swollen radator cap black rubber causes the head gaskets to fail because there is to much pressure. I have many customers happy with 2002 and 2003 Altima 2.5 liter engines. Just careful mechanical repair and getting the most out of Nissan for the customers I guess.

Just about any QR-25DE motor will work I would stick to 2002 to 2005 Altima motors that will make the job easier try to get an engine with the cat converter (exhaust manifold) still on it. The Sentra SER 2.5 liter motor will work but you have to strip it down to the bare engine and use all your intake and exhaust parts. I have successfully replaced may head gaskets. Just depends on how hot it got and how many miles. It will be expensive I estimate $3,400 Good Luck
