He didn't call or come to work for three days and on the fourth day he did call. BTW his wife lost her job about 3 weeks ago (no kids). He said he went out of town for Christmas but didn't put in for the vacation.

I've seen it happen. We had one girl who came back from Thanksgiving a week late. She claimed she thought she had been on vacation. They fired her without a second thought.

Certainly I'd fire him. Given that his wife doesn't have a job, he should definitely be at work and not jeopardizing his.

Also, depending on the job, the holiday season is tough; staff are low and business can be quite busy. He could have left the others at work stranded.

If I didn't fire him, he'd be written up and certainly wouldn't get a good review. It would depend on his prior work history.

Yes I would.

If he's a long term employee who has always done an outstanding job and been very responsible, and never done anything like this before, and is now very apologetic, I might consider giving him a second chance, but only after a talk where it was made very clear that if he does any future actions even remotely like this one, he's gone.

of course i would fire him, he put himself in that situation, he didn't want the job. if he didn't call it's not your fault his wife lost her job to. she probably lost it because, she was to lazy to call in too.

Yea, I'd fire him. The only way I wouldn't fire someone who missed three days without calling in, is if they were in the hospital.

Companies often refer to this as 'job abandonment'. It's very a firing offense and completely at the discretion of management.

Yes, he should be fired. There is no excuse for not calling in .
I have been a manager for 7 years, and have heard all the excuses. The fact that his wife lost her job has nothing to do with it. If you allow him to get away with this, what will you do when the next person does the same thing?
Good Luck

Firing people would be dependant on their personal flammability. It is a waste of time firing someone who has ingested so much asbestos and PBB at their workplace that they are fireproof.
