Well I had my first child at 13, I was in foster care so I worked hard to save back money- so we could move out. My son and I moved out on our own when I was 15 years old. It went great our first year on our own, but I lost my good job (the place got sent to China so everyone that worked there- which was over 100 people- were looking for a job in this small city at the same time) so with that being said all kinds of bad things happened. We had NOTHING basically. My son and I even had to live out of my car for awhile, which he thought it was cool because we were "camping." I got back on my feet after a few LONG months though. The little dude is now 8 years old and we live in a great place, with his new little siblings and we are all very happy.

Ah college...

My roommate and I once lived on spaghetti noodles with no sauce for a week.

And we were both working at the time.

Fortunately no kids at the time.

I once floated a friend of mine and his 4 month old son for 3 months until he was able to find a job. The mom ran off and the guy got laid off right afterwards. It was terrible. The dad was going out and doing hauling/etc to earn a little bit of money until he could find a real job. To his credit as soon as he found a job he paid me back every penny, it took him 6 months but he did it. And now he and his son are living well.

Literally counting out pennies to buy milk or bread. More than once. Embarrassing, but it's still money.

We're very lucky to be able to live comfortably. Things have never gotten so bad that money has been too tight for food, though there have been times bills have had to get pushed to the next month. My husband can remember his parents looking through the couch for change to buy milk when he was a child.

Right now is probably the poorest I have been. We are not necessarily scraping pennies for dinner, but money is tight. We are currently going through a foreclosure because of severe financial loss. We are cutting our budget tight to allow me to continue staying at home with the kids. It is stressful at times, but so very worth it.
