Just wondering...there are so many bad and/or indifferent spellers online now. I usually assume that the person is lazy or just plain old incompetent if they can't spell. However, it's getting to be a rarity when you actually see complete sentences, so maybe I'm the only one! lol ; )

This is true and this is why I think people like this should come to this site. Here they can meet people who are better spellers and writers than themselves and learn some things.

A lot of learning is unconscious and subconscious and even semi-literate people are slowly improving their minds by reading some of the messages posted on here whether they know it or not.

I'm sure there is some correlation between intelligence and spelling ability but we must also be careful not to overdraw any conclusions about that too. The world is full of poorly educated people who are intelligent but simply never had the opportunity to go to college.

Many people who go to high school in small towns are at a disadvantage too since upper-middle class suburban school districts usually get the best teaching talent.

I think that way! I get paranoid that I use spell check after wards. I am a good speller and do get irritated when people spell the smallest words incorrectly.

No. I have a high IQ, but I was never good at spelling. There are a lot of young people on these sites and they just don't care what they put in their message. It shouldn't really matter if they can spell or complete a sentence, they are asking or answering a question. The only point should be; Can people understand what you are trying to say. That is my only peeve; that they write something and you can't decipher what they said. Spelling isn't high on my list. What if somebody was talking about killing themselves? They can't spell or they couldn't complete a sentence. Does this make what they are trying to say less important, because of bad spelling? This is not an English class, but a site with a lot of crazy and off the wall questions and answers, with an plethora of ages and intelligence. That's it, no more no less. Get your nose out of the air and start having fun.

I've been an extremely adept speller/speaker/typer since I was young.
I consider myself 2 have been thoroughly blessed.

The level of illiteracy in the United States is(and has been) shameful!

I would not say that lack of spelling aptitude indicates a lack of intelligence per se,
but I do feel that a person exhibiting proper spelling/grammer would more likely than not be more intelligent than many(most).

Yes I think people should take time to stop all the typos. So we can understand them for once.

Not really unless it's really bad. Sometimes you just get tired but don't want to log off because you can't sleep.
