I was cleaning in front of my house and i let my golden retriever roam around the front to get some air. Now nothing has happened yet until my brother plays catch with it up and down the street. Then a man comes out and yells out that my dog shouldn't be allowed to run around freely. He says that its making his cat scared. He said ,"Since i have my cat on a leash, you should too." My dog was no where near his house. It never barked either. All it did was play fetch. So he also mentioned that he could call animal control and that it was illegal. So is it?

It will depend on your city's laws. The town I grew up in did not have any leash laws but the next town over (only a couple miles away) did have them. Check with your local police department. They should have the information you need.

Yes, it is illegal.

Your dog needs to be on a leash every time it is out of your yard. There are dog parks where you can allow your dog off leash to run & play with other dogs or play a game of fetch with you.

Most all Police dogs are leashed even though they are trained to be off leash. Even service dogs are leashed & they too are trained to be off leash. Some people attach a leash but let it drag, that is wrong too.

A dog MUST be on a leash if it is not in it's own yard.

strange country!!..l.o.l. if that is the case then you have to play fetch in the back garden i guess. he was probably scared that your dog would chase the cat is all. best be on the safe side and play out the back.

It depends on where you live. But in my area there is a leash law. When a dog is outside it must be confined in a fenced in area, or on a leash. This man is probably just being grumpy for no reason. But if there are leash laws in your area, then yes, it is illegal to let him play in the street without a leash.

It is illegal, my boyfriends dog accidently go loose from the backyard...she got picked up by the dog catcher and when we went to go get her, they slapped a fine on him because it is illegal to have your dog out in public with out a restraint...I hope this helps...i know its probably alot of fun, but better safe than sorry....try buying one of those retractable leads. she will be able to run around pretty far but at the same time she will still be restrained.....good luck!!

Hi , it does depend on where you live . Check with your local council for by-laws or if you have a dog warden . They can tell you , that way you know your rights . However as a responsible dog owner you must always respect others and their pets cause you never know what can happen and its better to be safe than sorry .

It's state by state. Colorado and Wyoming have leash laws. Some states don't like Louisiana (to my knowledge) and Indiana. You'll have to check specificaly for your state. Trying googleing "leash laws in ____"

Yes, dogs must be under your control atall times. That means on a leash. You could have to pay a big fine.
