That depends entirley what you will be using it for. Small game= spring type, usually has higher pellet speed.
target shooting, plinking around=gas/co2, less time to reload, can get away with cheaper ammo.

It would depend on what you intend to use it for.

My preference is for very high quality spring piston air guns, they then to "wear in" rather than wear out.
If you want an air rifle you can hunt small game out to 80-100yds you will have to go with a PCP such as the Hunting Master AR6
For small game out to 40-60yds
Beeman R1
RWS 350
For small game out to 40-50yds
RWS 34
FWB 124
For Olympic type matches
Feinwerkbau
Anschutz

In general, the spring guns are going to be about twice as powerful unless you get into the high dollar bulk air gas guns that you fill with a scuba tank or similar. If you are talking about typical 12 gram CO2 rifles, they usually top out at about 550 fps if you are lucky and you will see 20-30 full power shots from a 12 gram powerlet if you are lucky. With a spring cock gun you can get past 1200 fps with .177 for a reasonable price. It depends on what you want to do with the rifle. I have a Crosman 1077 CO2 rifle which mimics semi-auto performance with a double action revolver mechanism using a ten round .177 pellet magazine. It is very very fun to shoot at close targets and super accurate with Crosman Match Wadcutters. It is underpowered and falls off after about 20 shots in the field... where a 1000 fps spring cocker would be so much better, IMHO. I shoot the 1077 indoors the at targets about 25 yards away max. It is more of a toy than anything.

Here is a link to info on air rifles of all kinds.
If you are looking for power either a CO2 type
or hand pump (multiple pumps) is probably
what you want. Most modern rifles would be
of this type anyway.

Gas is faster loading, but it's a toss up.
You can run out of air cartridges, while the spring type will keep shooting.

Don't forget the electric ones BB guns. They have a good rate of fire and offer more consistency in varied temperatures than gas powered guns.
And it's going to depend very much on what you want to use the BB gun for. No BB gun is suitable for hunting so either get yourself a (good) spring powered air rifle or a precharged air rifle. These should ensure a a clean kill.
