Ok, we had decided to use the niece of a friend of our family to professionally videotape our daughter's Sweet 16 party and to make DVDs out of the footage.
We got two DVDs as planned; one worked and the other one didn't. It just stood on the menu screen and when I clicked "play" nothing happened. The woman accepted in back and gave us another DVD free of charge. When we got 2 more DVDs back; again one worked and the other one did not. This time one of the DVDs constantly skipped despite cleaning and it would not stay straight.
Now, a friend of ours is having a wedding and had called asking about how we liked this woman taping our party and did we like the results. I told her the truth; I said the footage was great but she gave us a couple of faulty DVDs that would not work. She tried to correct the problem but the second time she once again gave us a faulty disk.
A day later, the video person calls us blaming us for having made her lose a client and saying she has bad DVDs.

DVDs were personally handed to me, not through the mail.

Hey, you were honest and were not completely satisfied with their work. If they want to blame anyone for losing a customer, they need to blame themselves for not building up good referrals by providing quality service. You did nothing wrong.

No I don't believe you did anything wrong intentionally, however you could have handled it differently. Next time after you perform wudu, make sure you're completely dry before leaving since you know any water on the floor upsets your mum. secondly, just apologize and end it there. It doesn't matter who's right and who's wrong. and if compelled to explain, don't mention your mother in any explanation when there's a dispute. I would have said it more like, " that isn't how I remember it."

Honest answer:
You are not a technician and you did not receive the results promised. You were honest in YOUR opinion. I would have done the same.
I would send her (video person) a note stating the above. He/she may need to hone/refine their expertise with video equipment and/or update their hardware.
You do not owe anyone an apology for the experience you encountered.

I have a question:
After getting the second set of DVDs, did you tell the video person about the trouble [giving her a chance to resolve it]?
If you didn't tell the video person that you were still having problems, I can be more understanding of her being upset.
However, if you told her you were having problems with set#2 and she blew you off, you did absolutely nothing wrong.

You answered a question truthfully. Granted, she did try to fix the problem, but a person looking to have their wedding videotaped will want to know ahead of time that they might get some non-working DVDs. What would have been wrong is to let the person hire them for the wedding, then when they said, "Our wedding DVD's were faulty," Then you chime in with, "Hey that happened to us!" and you didn't say anything ahead of time to help prevent their troubles. You did the right thing and were a good friend.
The person should not blame you; she should blame herself for not using a higher quality DVD to record on.

first of all, if there was something wrong you have every right to either recommend her services or not, depending on how satisfied you were with the services she provided. true, she did try to rectify the situation, but she still gave you a faulty DVD the second time around, so she didn't really fix the problem. i say you are in the right, she's the one who screwed up, so she doesn't get a good referral from you. seems more than fair to me. happy new year!!!

You were not only honest, but very fair. You stated exactly what was good about it and what wasn't, and you didn't exaggerate the bad stuff or play down the good stuff. The fact is, she did have bad DVD's! That may not have been her fault, but as a professional, she should have checked them to be sure they played before giving them to you; the fact that she neglected to do this on two separate occasions, one of them being after she already knew there was a problem, would lead me to not want to hire her either. I think you did exactly the right thing, and she only has her own self to blame for this one.
