Eczema

2007-12-31 09:25:29 · answer #1 · answered by Wrangler 3 · 2 0

IF he does not have fleas... could be allergies, mange, dry weather = dry skin, skin parasites, hot spots, etc...

Could be tons of things. You should see a vet to be sure if he's really scratching more than normal and it continues.

is he a lab?
He probably has dry skin, take him to the vet and tell them your dog's skin is very irritated. It probably is dry skin, though. Especially if your dog is a Labrador.

Because Labs were made for swimming in water, their bodies create a lot of oil that coats their fur. and if you don't bathe him alot the oils coat his skin and fur then dry up. That would probably irritate his/her skin because the oil is all "crusty" (sorta....crusty is the best word I can find...but it doesn't flake or anything...) is it his/her belly that's bothering him/her the most?

Just apply some lotion to the belly area and bathe him regularaly with a special shampoo. Your vet will tell you all about it.

If your dog is an indoor dog, he may have dry skin. A lot of dogs who live full time indoors scratch continuously because their skin is itchy.

As long as he isn't pulling his hair out in tufts, you probably shouldn't worry. If it is bothersome (that continuous scratching, gnawing, nibbling, licking etc., yes I know what you mean), dogs can take benadryl over the counter allergy meds, or you could spend a lot more money and go to the vet.

Do you feed him a quality food? I not, that could be causing it. Many skin problems come from food.

Try switching to Innova Evo, Canidae, Orijen, or Solid Gold, all which can be bought at local pet stores. Although they are a bit more expensive, you feed less and have a healthy dog.
