My question is about using humour as a tool for de-stressing a situation, or whether it makes it worse.

I choose Islam as christianity seems to be fairly fair game nowadays, despite the fact that they kick of about childrens films from time to time, at least they don't kill anyone.

Most core religions don't have a sense of humour, but films such as the Life of Brian have gone on to make something as creepy as worshiping a dead man on a cross (graven image) less so.

comedy is a way of accesing a scary situation and making it acceptable, thats why we have 'gallows humour' right?

It seems to me that if a section of society is 'untouchable' than that makes it more dangerous. People with a sense of humour don't fly planes into buildings.

should we just leave religious humour to those who understand it, or can we all join in?

It's everyone's decision for themselves at what humor they partake in, however humor doesn't have to be insulting. Imho, someone who makes it his/her intentions to insult someone in a joke is neither funny, nor wise enough to think of any REAL jokes.
Laugh, giggle, make fun all you want, it's your life. But I can guarantee you that the more respectful you are about it (which really isn't hard at all) the more others will respect you for it.

Yes, we should be allowed to make fun of Islam, but not in rude ways...if that makes sense. We should not put anyone in danger, because the extremists will use death and destruction when they feel insulted.

Any fun which is allowed in Islam can be done like sex with wife, trips with family, sports, etc. If you say fun at strip club or bar then it is not allowed.

I'm in agreement w/ a lot of what you're saying. In spite of the opinions expressed on R & S by 'Muslims', I have yet to meet one with a real sense of humor. I pray it is just the extremists who are so uptight, but any group that takes themselves that seriously invites being made fun of.

Humor does lessen a sticky sitiuation but when people have no sense of humor then it is a collosal waste of time.
People get very sensitive when it comes to religion and each has religion has its share of flaws. I personally think that religion should be left out of humor because it makes a bad sitiuation worse.

We shouldn't make fun of anyone's religion or them. That is not being a good Christian. Although we shouldn't be happy that some Muslims want to destroy us, and Muhammed won't come back to earth unless all people are Muslims. The Jews are the first to go, and the Christians are next. Switch or die. The twin towers were suppose to bankrupt us and ruin our economy. It did cause a very small glitch, but we bounced back.

the truth has little to fear from laughter.

in fact you can gauge how nonsensical a belief is by how seriously it takes itself.
