For several months now, I have experienced severe cold and shivers when I get sleepy. It happens quite suddenly. For the most part, I will first feel like I'm freezing , then I will become extremely drowsy to the point of being unable to get up and go to bed.

I am planning to visit my doctor, but for the mean time I am curious what you think might be the cause of this.

My first suspicion would be thyroid function low. But, a full history may reveal other possibilities - like blood pressure issues, hormonal issues, etc. You may want to read up about it before seeing your doc. Try a naturopath, they usually have much less aggressive, yet successful therapies.

It's quite normal for the body temperature to drop and thus -you feel cold. When you are sleepy or are sleep deprived. You might have poor peripheral circulation and peripheral insufficiency. When you are hungry, your blood sugar will drop; drowsiness and fatigue might set in. Or you might be suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Then of course, there's the condition of Hypothyrodism where there is intolerance to cold. The only way, this can be ruled out, is via a doctor's visit and blood work.

So the possible causes of intolerance to cold, fatigue and drowsiness are:
:
1) Hypothermia
2) Hypoglycemia
3) CFS
4) Hypothyrodism
5) Common Colds, Flu, Fever, Infection
6) Effects of drugs, medication such as sedatives, cold tablets, antihistamines ; antidepressants
7) Loss of extreme weight esp body fat
8) Overdieting or skipped meals
9) Sleep deprivation- lack of quantity and quality sleep
10) Hunger
11) alcohol use
12) sleepy and fatigue due to lifestyles or sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea ( OSA) ; insomnia
13) lack of exercise
14) Poor nutrition - lots of simple sugars, and junk foods which can cause fatigue and drowsiness

These are common symptoms of hypothyroidism.
A simple blood test can check your thyroid stimulating hormone, this will let you know if hypothyroidism is your problem.

One of the most common conditions that can cause this problem is a low level of thyroid hormone. Your doctor will check your thyroid gland when he orders blood tests. If that is the problem, he/she can give you thyroxin, a hormone, to fix you up.
