get the memory stick out and put it in another camera, that screen is ruined

Well at least you can use it as a paperweight.
Time to begin shopping for a new camera. Maybe one of the Olympus Stylus SW series which are waterproof and shock-resistant. Your son should, IMO, pay at least 1/2 the cost.
NOTE: If you want to try drying it out using rice it should be UNCOOKED (dry) rice. IMO a waste of time and rice but its your decision.

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do except get a new camera. The same thing happened to my boyfriends camera. He left it outside by mistake and the display could not be seen. He took it to the store where he got it and they told him that he would be better off to just get a new one because if he wants to attempt to fix it, it will cost more than a new camera. I'm sorry about what occurred..just call this giving yourself a christmas present :)

you might want to put in
cooked warm rice
it will soak up the water
mabye that will help??
