You can have a job and still have a Setter. I have an English Setter (13 months old). While Setters are VERY active dogs outdoors, they tend to be couch potatoes inside. My dog will run all day outside, play and roughhouse with the other dogs, and walk us until we can't walk anymore, but as soon as we come in the house, he's up on the couch and right to sleep. They don't need constant activity, just make sure they get the physical and mental exertion that they need sometime throughout the day.

Plan on having a fenced yard (at LEAST 5 feet tall) before considering one, though. They all seem to need it.

If you're really thinking of a Setter, find a great breeder who'll be there for you, or a rescue...these places can answer questions for you as the dog grows up...Setters are very emotionally sensitive, and require firm but always positive training...no yelling, no hitting, no negativity at all really. If you train them harshly, they give up trying. That said, I find them HIGHLY trainable, and very loving and lovable. They are really rather humorous dogs, and sometimes I swear they TRY to make you laugh! They love to cuddle, and they love to work. If you like hunting upland birds, you'll have no greater hunting partner. If you have specific questions about the dogs, feel free to e-mail me, I'll help if I can, or try to direct you to someone who can.

we had a Irish/lab mix. looked like a long haired black lab, with the irish feathering. good dog, but hyper. they need a lot of exercise or they can get destructive in the house.

All the dogs you mention can make wonderful pets. They all need gentle consistent obedience classes (like clicker training) and lots and lots of exercise.

Irish Setters are beautiful dogs, but have a reputation for not being the brightest dogs around. They are very affectionate, gentle and sweet, but get distracted easily.

I am partial to English Setters because my granddad bred the hunting variety. They are loyal active lively dogs with a need to have a job.

Gordon Setters are a bit more mellow but need vigorous exercise to be really happy. They are gentle sensitive dogs who need careful training.

Yes excellent dog with great temperment. You should have lots of space to allow him to run in the fresh outdoor air and get plenty of exercise. You should make the commitment to spend lots of time with the dog.

for somebody who likes to seek, provides them with 3 hours of working in an open field on a regular basis, who provides them great quantities of psychological stimulation, and who's prepared to coach their canines interior and out.
