I don't understand why the answer above about semi wadcutters got a thumbs down. That's about the cheapest most effective way to feed a 45acp for punching paper. If I'm not shooting swc loads I shoot Aguila 230gr fmj's at 9.99 a box. My 1911's will eat swc, fmj & jhp rounds like candy, but my Blackhawk convertible likes round nose lead or fmj only.
After you get some trigger time with your new HiPoint you'll figure out what the pistol likes and what it doesn't.

I am also answering Boker here also. Look at the weapon that is being discussed. HiPoints are not ramped or throated for anything but ball ammo. If it does feed semiwads, I will be more than slightly surprised. By all means, you can try different types of ammo but in my humble opinion, ball would be the least likely to cause you feeding problems. I hope this helps.

I have one and it's not very picky at all. Even the cheap shells won't jam it. Nice plinker with fully adjustable sights. I use federals because they are economical and not dirty.

I would use wad cutters or semi was cutters they are probably cheaper. FMJ will work but probably cost a little more. Hollow points as a last resort. If your just target practicing for the hell of it then wad cutters will work. Just make sure you clean your barrel very very good. Cause wad cutters having no jacket leave more lead residue in your barrel. The lead size doesn't matter.

230 gr. ball ammo in any brand is good enough for plinking.

Get some generic-type 230 grain FMJ....Winchester "white box", Remington UMC brand, or an import like this: http://cheaperthandirt.com/AMM520-3595-208.html

230gr FMJ is all that you need to plink. It is $11.97( Blazer Brass-I use it in my Kimber alongside UltraMax 230gr lead ball) at Wal-Mart (at least where I live).

Update: Boker_ma... I did not thumb down anybody but I figure that fmj ball would probably be the most reliable in a crude, cheap Ohio-made .45ACP (these guns are distributed 15 min. from where I live). Maybe lead ball after the gun is broke in. And where are you getting .45ACP for less than $10 a box??!! I want spme of that!
