They use medications, some use seclusion rooms, others use 2 point, 4 point or 5 point restraints using either soft straps or leather straps depending on the reason for the restraints. They are suppose to use the least restrictive measure needed to ensure the safety of all the patients and hospital personnel

It's called a straight jacket. It so you can't move your arms or hands. Sometimes they'll strap or handcuff you to a gurney.

6. Restraint equipment: an approved device listed in the Security Equipment Manual and intended to temporarily restrict or limit free movement such as:
Soft restraints: leather belts, straps, restraint jackets and other soft restraint equipment listed in the Security Equipment Manual.
Four-point and above (i.e. seven-point) restraints: a soft restraint system that restrains at least four limbs and allows for the restraint of other body parts (i.e. head, shoulders, etc.) depending on the particular situation. A higher level of authorization is required for the use of four-point restraints (i.e. physician and/or psychiatrist approval must be obtained prior to the use of four-point restraints). When restraining less than four limbs, the nurse and/or psychologist may authorize the use of soft restraint equipment without prior physician/psychiatrist approval.
Hard restraints: handcuffs, leg irons, body belts and lead chains as listed in the Security Equipment Manual.

There are different kinds of restraints, chemical and physical.
Different medications can be used as a form of restraint, there are tray tables, seat belts, bed rails, wrist and ankle restraints etc.
Not all restraints are used negatively, more often restraints are used as safety measures.

Meds mostly. They chemically turn you into a quasi zombie.
Or for those people who are acting out -- the straight jacket and the padded room.
