OMG. Are you my brother? I grew up in it and lived it so long I feel guilty for just about everything I say or do or think.

I think that as children, our parents practice legalism. It helps them keep order in the family. When we reach puberty we begin to push the envelope, until we break free at around 18 or so. So it would seem that we all grow up in that environment.

Legalism is NOT a biblical term. It is a term used by those who refuse to be governed by the Almighty.

Obedience to God is just that. OBEDIENCE. Following after your denomination is LEGALISM.

Do you really believe that the Almighty is going to judge you for living in obedience to His Word? That's insanity in it's most grotesque manifestation.

Legalism can manifest itself in many ways..we can be legalistic about the law, the Fruit of the Spirti, kindness wrongly defined by worldly standards, humility, worship style, a variety of false doctrines, emotions/sincerity, individual experience/revelation, blessings/suffering, you name it. Our broken nature gravitates towards self justification and self glorification and legalism is the prescription that soothes the empty soul.

Legalism occurs in the Christian community when individually or collectively we agree on a code of behavior based on God's Word that dictates 1) what God is going to let us get away with 2) a method of self justification or self glorification by comparisons between men and/or 3) a spiritual caste system to establish degrees of Christian thought or behavior.

Everyone is legalistic to one degree or another.

Yes, and it is odorous to the believer. Paul spoke out quite vociferously against it. We have been given freedom in Christ. We are under grace, not law.
