Good for you for trying to save dogs and cats in the New Orleans area. That's great. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Make sure all radio stations, newspapers and TV stations within a 200 mile radius know about your organization and that dogs and cats are available for adoption. With the Internet, it's very easy to compile this list. Your nonprofit can even register on VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://craigslist.com) to find a volunteer who will compile all of this contact information for you.

Your message to these media outlets should include how people interested in adopting or fostering pets can contact your organization, and a bit about the benefits of pet adoption. It should be a message that radio and TV stations can easily read in just a few seconds, as a PSA. Invite newspapers to do stories on the plight of abandoned pets in the NOLA area, and profiles of people who have adopted pets so far.

Make sure your organization's web site has lots of information on the benefits and REALITIES of pet adoption (such as it being a lifetime commitment). Don't stress the desperation of the situation, but rather, the wonderful opportunity this presents for people to adopt dogs and cats. Provide testimonials from people who have adopted dogs and cats, talking about how great it is.

On the more-advanced front, you could recruit a volunteer via the aforementioned web sites to create a short video to post to YouTube encouraging pet adoptions in your area. You would need someone who could film, edit and otherwise produce such a video to your specifications.

Create a profile on MySpace and FaceBook for your organization, that provides highlights of your web site information. Make sure all of your current staff and volunteers who have profiles on MySpace and FaceBook link to your organization's profile.

Good luck.
