Culturally in arts, Hinduism has enriched Indians and is appreciated as leading culture in the world. Politically, as part of culture, it is a caste (class) system that categorizes the Indians: Brahmans as the highest class worthy of worship, the class of rulers, the class of the rich ... and the Dalits the lowest who have been the outcasts for many centuries.
Quote: The Indian caste system describes the social stratification and social restrictions in the Indian subcontinent, in which social classes are defined by thousands of endogamous, hereditary groups often termed as jātis or castes. Within a jāti there exist exogamous groups known as gotras, the lineage or clan of a person, although in a handful of sub-castes like Shakadvipi endogamy within a gotra is permitted and alternative mechanisms of restricting endogamy are used (e.g. banning endogamy within a surname).
Although generally identified with Hinduism, the caste system was also observed among followers of other religions in the Indian subcontinent, including some groups of Muslims and Christians[1]. The Indian Constitution has outlawed caste-based discrimination, in keeping with the socialist, secular, democratic principles that founded the nation.[2]. Caste barriers have mostly broken down in large cities[3], though persist in rural areas of the country. The caste system, in various forms, does continue to play a major role in the Indian society and politics.[4][5]

Certainly Hinduism produced someone like Gandhi.
Buddhism once flourished in India and at its peak, it provided famous compassionate societies ruled by Kings like Asoka - before it disappeared by the influences of Hindu and Islamic powers. But now Buddhism is back to India and there are a few Buddhist monasteries.
Actually, your question is about a very vast issue so it worth a PHD if you really try to cover it in detail. It will be a fat book certainly.
