Panasonic and Pioneer are about neck and neck when it comes to picture quality either from a 1080p source (HD-DVD and blu-ray) or an HD signal source (cable or satellite up to 1080i). However, Panasonic's TVs have less than a 1% failure rate whereas other manufacturers are around 3.5%.
The best advice I can give, though, is to always budget for the extended warranty on a plasma - and purchase it through the manufacturer not the dealer. If you do have an issue and something goes wrong - it usually happens just out of the warranty period - which is generally 1 year parts and labor.

To make the plasma for your TV, you will need sea salt, baby oil and vinager. For the screen of your TV, you will need a sheet of transparent sheet of plexyglass no more than 1/9 of an inch think. You will need to remove the back portion of your television, then remove the old glass from your TV and replace it with the plexyglass. Place the TV face down so the inside of your TV is open. Mix the items above and pour on the plexy glass. Add a tube of super glue to the mixture. (this will allow the top portion of the mixture to harden while the portion not exposed to air stays gelled) This creates your plasma. Wait about five minutes. Place your TV up right and then put it against the wall. Now take a picture of the front of your TV. Next go to an auction website and sell this piece of junk as a used HDTV. Reapeat these steps 3 or 4 times and you may have enough money to get you a real HDTV that actually works. Don't try this at home kids, or anyone esle for that matter.

Consumer Reports rated the Panasonic TH-50PZ700U 50" 1080p Plasma HDTV as the best picture they've ever seen in any TV. I believe that's a close cousin to the one you mention.

With all respects to the marine, extended warranties are almost always a bad deal on electronics. You saw what he said, a 3.5% failure rate. For that you pay somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% to 30% extra. Both Clark Howard, a syndicated radio consumer advocate, and Consumer Reports says extended warranties are bad ideas. Something like 80% of the fee goes to pure profit.

If you want a free extra year of warranty, buy the TV with a credit card that offers a doubling of warranty. Most except all for the most basic of Visas or MC will have this coverage for free. Look over your benefits statement for terms and conditions.
