"Christ" is a title, not part of Jesus's name. It means "Annointed One."
In English, we have some play with these kinds of grammatical structures. I think they're called appositives, but don't quote me on that.
So we could say "The Annointed One Jesus" or "Jesus The Annointed One." Both work in our language.

The proper name is Jesus the Christ. The person was Jesus and his role was that of the Christ. All three of the ways you indicated would be/are an appropriate manner of addressing him. (the) Christ, Jesus Christ, or Christ Jesus. All three assume the word 'the' to be correct. The Christ, Jesus the Christ and The Christ Jesus.

I have heard some theological explanation of the difference, but I am too simple-minded to keep the distinctions straight in my head.

Because ''Christ'' is a title, and ''Jesus'' is a name. ''Jesus the Christ'' is what my Vicar says most of the time.

And all who thought "Christ" was his last name... It's like saying "Anabaptist" was John the Baptist's wife!

And don't forget Jesus the Christ.
Krishna was the only God Man known at that time... so anyone who had those kind of attributes was called the Kristos. It was a common reference for a divine person back then... and of course since that was the middle east, we should not be surprised to hear this in terms of an eastern influence.
