I have heard this spoken many times and today someone said that to my face. Ironically the person who quoted it didn't know herself.

Does anyone know which verse or chapter this phrase is from?

Nowhere in the bible will you find that verse

The actual quote is "God helps them that help themselves" -Ben Franklin (Poor Richard's Almanack) http://usinfo.state.gov/products/pubs/oal/lit2.htm

The bible says the opposite:

Romans 5:6 says, "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Isaiah 25:4 states, "For You have been a defense for the helpless, a defense for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat..."

That phrase is not anywhere in the Bible. Someone might tell you to look up Hezekiah 6:1 or possibly Phillips 66:1 - but neither of those are actual Bible books, even though they sound authentic enough.

This is very similar to the ancient Greek saying "syn Athena ke chira kini" Συν Αθηνά και χείρα κίνει.
In free translation it means, do not expect that the goddess Athena will do it for you, unless you give it a hand too.

Conservative catholics edition of the new new testament in first popes I think . Just kidding it comes from a old church " wise " tale saying god helps those who help themselves I would think that this was started because people were wondering why god didn't answer the phone and solve their problem for them .

Any time God did something great for someone, it always required some amount of effort on the part of the receiver or from someone on behalf of the receiver. The direct quote is not in the Bible, but the concept is implied.
