More details: My cat doesn't use a litter box anymore, and has always gone outside on his own when he needs to go to the bathroom. Now that I have been closing the window at night, Jack the Cat is either stuck inside, or I don't want him stuck outside in the winter cold without a way in. I am not always around to let him in/out, but this was never a problem until the racoons discovered the dry cat food & water source in my house by coming in the cat door. For the first time, last night I was not home, and Jack was stuck in the house without a way out, and he had an accident on the carpet. He is an 8yr old cat, and never had this problem before, and it is only because I was not there to open the cat door for him. I'm thinking about putting a litter box back in, just for these occasions, but I can not be held captive to these raccoons for the rest of our lives! Any advice????

They acutally sell cat doors with sensors. The door has a sensor and will only open when the cat has a matching sensor that attaches to the collar. Check out www.solopetdoors.com

Purchase an electronic cat door...and collar your cat with a special collar (comes with the door) so that the door will ONLY open for YOUR cat and will not allow other animals or wildlife in.

Once raccoons find the indoor food, you're sunk.

Either live trap them and move each one at least 5 miles from your place, or lock the cat door and keep an indoor box for your cat, keeping him indoors.

Once the raccoons find the food, it's usually not long before possums and skunks come in also.

Set a trap inside the door and transplant them to a rural area. Or--they taste similar to possum.

get the locked cat door.....the door locks behind the cat....the cat wears a collar with a "key" on it that will unlock the cat door when he approaches it.....

do give kitty his litter box back then get a live trap from animal control if you want to do it yourself ( there may be several varmints so could take time) or you may have to hire a exterminator good luck.. also be aware raccoons can be mean!!!!

Try placing a talk radio outside your home. Raccoons generally try to avoid humans. The sound of people talking may be enough to keep them at bay.
4Step FourGet a dog or put store-bought, dried urine around the perimeter of your yard. Some raccoons might be intimidated by the smell of a large animal.
