I'm taking Amox as of 2 a.m. this morning. How long before it kicks in? I am in pain... gotta go to dentist.... just waiting for this to kick in and start killing the infection. I understand that Amox is not a pain killer but anitbiotics work on infection which causes pain... so I know it will help. Can someone please advise. I have no dentist until January 10th. Thanks for your help.

Except for the first idiot who called you a nasty name, the people above me are correct. Their answers vary from 24 to 48 or more hours. It depends on how bad the infection is and how you define "kick in."

From other information that you have given me, I would say that you probably have "pericoronitis," which is rather common around erupting wisdom teeth. The tooth literally bites its way through from the inside and then you get an infection in this raw wound from your own saliva. Or, if you have a partially impacted #17 (haha - which I gathered from my Nikkor Crystal Ball), there is a LOT of territory there that saliva and bacteria can get to that neither you nor your dentist can get to.

SOMETIMES, the sharp points on the tooth above the wisdom tooth can be irritating the gum over the partially erupted tooth and that point can be "filed down" to provide almost instant relief.

I'll see if I can find your photos, by the way, when time permits. Thanks.

When I had an infection around my erupting wisdom tooth, it took about just over twenty-four hours before I felt the pain beginning to ebb. Until then, I had to take regular paracetamol and ibuprofen (alternating between the two) to keep on top of the pain.

If you feel your pain isn't going away, you should go to your local hospital which will provide basic dental care in an emergency.

ANGELINA,
THE THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT IT USUALLY TAKES 2-3 DAYS FOR ANTIBIOTICS INCLUDING AMOXICILLIN TO BEGIN TO START TS BE EFFECTIVE AGAINST THE INFECTION. FOR PAIN TAKE IBUPROFEN (ADVIL) 2-3 PILLS EVERY 4-6 HOURS.
THE INFECTION DOES CAUSE PAIN BECAUSE OF INFLAMMATION.
ADVIL IS ANTI-INFLAMMATORY.

For me it usually takes 24 hours, so please if you can take some tylenol or motrin with it!
