Yesterday I was out deer hunting. Let me preface this by declaring I am not a trophy hunter, since anything I kill goes to feed the family, I tend to prefer them young and tender!

I was still hunting on the ground by a stream and two deer walked within 25 yards of me. There was a large doe and a small spike. I was in the thick woods and elected to carry my 12 gauge auto loader and buckshot. I shot the doe and dropped her and the spike didn't run off, he sidestepped a little and just stayed there. I think a pellet may have grazed him and stunned it a bit or the shock wave confused him, but either way it was pretty untypical whitetail behavior. So, I shot a second time and took him too.

There are no restrictions on any size/sex deer where I hunt. In fact the deers number have become so plentiful they are actually a nuisance nowadays.

The meat won't be wasted. It will be use for food. Would you have shot both? For some reason I feel guilty today and I don't know why.....

There is room for all of GOD's creatures right next to the mashed potatoes on your plate! Whether it is male or female is of no matter. You are a hunter and need not apologize for it . The spike buck may have been the offspring of the doe and became confused what to do when the doe was shot. Yes, in a few years he might have developed a bigger rack than two spikes but then again, someone might have shot him later that day or a few days down the road. Great job, I could only hope for such good luck afield. Enjoy the bountiful harvest! Good for you!!!

You did the right thing, I don't shot doe's when they have their little ones (my choose and local laws, I'm not judging). The little one most likely would have died in one form or another anyway.

Nice harvest, I love hunting deer with shotguns

Yes,or 50.....there are way too many deer causing death and destruction to man and their own habitat.Where I am you CANNOT DRIVE at night.Usually there are 2-3 hit per night with a car and I have to slam on brakes 4-5 times per night coming home. They are all over. One jumped through this old ladies picture window and trashed the house and almost killed her. Many crops/gardens/flowers are destroyed because of them.

They need to be controlled. Its part of the food chain and they have no natural predators anymore..unlike many years ago TOO MANY strict hunting laws.....and lack of hunters and good hunters....

As long as the law in your area allows for the killing of two deer, the same day, no problem.
For "Lestermo" for a person who has claimed to shot deer, I'm surprised at your statement regarding "spike Bucks" being an inferior animal. Not true. the rack, or horns on a deer depend on age and food supply, and a spike can be a yearling or a young deer with little food, or food of poor quality, not an inferior animal.

No ,and you should'nt either.I hunt the meat to eat,and feed my family to.I've seen the deer like you,and if you don't keep their numbers in check, they will over populate, and will die from starvation. There is nothing worst than seeing thousand's of them standing along the road dieing. This is something people don't understand if we don' t hunt nature will take care of it ,and usually in a very cruel way such as starvition.

I started hunting at a VERY young age (8) and went for my first deer hunt two years ago (12) just after i got my licence. I shot my first deer that week and was almost in tears when i did. My family eats the meat and our neighbors take every thing else none goes to waste the first two days i felt very guilty then as i thought about it the dees died a fast death it is not going to waste and i had some bonding time with my dad.
in your sitiuatios, yes i would of shot the second one and not leave it there wounded! Dont feel guilty man has been hunting scence the beggining of time and hey he have canine teeth for a reason!

for me it would depend on the property i was hunting. a couple years ago i would have taken both anywhere, but this past season we just started a management program on our main farm so a little bucks get let go. now on my other parcels i would have shot both befor he had a chance to run

Because he didn't run I would too think he was hurt or stunned. While I do not care for hunting, I grew up with it and I don't think you should feel guilty. Part of it all was just a natural instinct on your part. No worries...
