Our nieghbor made lanterns with coffee cans by doing this:
Use a magic marker to "dot" a design on the can like some stars or a sun or some geometrics. Then use a hammer and nail to punch holes in the dots to make the design.
Fill 8" aluminum pie tins with sand and then place a tea candle in the sand. Put the coffee can lantern over the candle and place them up your walkway or on your patio for entertaining.
They look really nice. He spray paints the ones he uses at Christmas time in red and gold. Summer ones I've seen in the silver aluminum but I'm sure you could paint them decorativly too.

Hi, I don't know about you but I love to create useful items with different things from around the house, here are a few ideas for you that I have used coffee cans for, 1- A Toilet Paper holder made with three lg coffee cans, glued together with a hot glue gun, and decorate them however you like, and 2 - gadget holders, use as many as you like, nail them to a board, size of board depends on how many cans you use, hang it in either your basement, garage, or office, you can use it to hold tools, important papers, nuts, bolts, screws, etc or if your crafty like me, you can use them to keep your crafts organized, hope this helps.

Make candles or ice candles out of them. Get some plain parrafin from the craft store and melt it down with whatever old crayon colors you would want.
My sister and I would make ice candles. We would use old coffee cans, juice cans, etc.
Suspend a wick over the center by tying it to a pencil and then letting the remainder dangle to the bottom.
Pour some ice in the can to the height you would want it.
Pour the melted wax over the ice (or right into the can if you don't want to use ice.) Let the wax harden. Pour out the melted ice water into the sink. You can use crushed ice or chunky ice. Either way, it comes out pretty!

You could make luminaries out of them - put a design on the can, punch with holes, spray paint the cans. put a small amount of sand in the bottom of the cans, put a candle in the bottom and light. I have also seen them stacked and make into snowmen, scarecrow, santas for Holiday decorations. I think they would make great tins for cookies and such.

I am a decorating-magazine junky. =P My favorite suggestion for old coffee cans, or paint cans, was to paint them and hang them, and/or stack them together over a toilet or sink, and roll up your favorite towels inside of them. It makes an extra storage space, and its cute.

I have seen them covered in attractive wallpaper, filled with clean sand lidded, stacked about 4 high and used as legs for a table. Can be also used outside on a patio, or if furniture is needed can be used with a painted wooden top for a coffee table, computer table, picnic table side table or a work table...etc. These were all the OLD 3lb size cans, and were more stable than 1lb sizes.
Edited...Wow what a great idea the gal had for lanterns....that is a safe way to do outdoor lanterns too. Thumbs up on that one.......
