It is from the date of creation!
P.S. For those of you that ask how come the scientists claim that the world is billions of years old, some scholars say that because of the flood with the boiling water........ the skeletons might look much older then it actually is

The Jewish calendar supposedly counts years from the world's creation - so the year would be 5768 AM (Anno Mundi). The Muslim calendar started with the Hijra, Muhammad's flight from Mecca to Medina to escape persecution. The Christian calendar is supposed to be tied with the year of Jesus' birth, hence 2007 AD (Anno Domini - "The Year of our Lord"). Of course, even Christian scholars maintain that this is not accurate, and that Jesus was born several years before 1 AD. Since "BC" is "Before Christ," it follows that Jesus was born several years before himself. But hey, it's just a rough estimate, the result of a well-meaning monk's mathematical mistake. Some scholars, for the sake of political correctness (not all people consider Jesus to have been G-d incarnate), substitute the terms "BCE" and "CE" (Before Common Era and Common Era) for BC and AD.
So, there you have it:
Jewish Calendar: Creation of the world vis-a-vis scripture
Muslim Calendar: Muhammad's flight from Mecca to Medina
Christian Calendar: (roughly) The Birth of Jesus
There are no doubt plenty of other calendars, but those are the three that I am personally most familiar with. I hope you find this information helpful.

It was a calculation made by rabbis and scholars based on the genealogies in Torah.
I don't know of any suggestions for changing it. It works just fine as it is.
