When you apply for a federal job, your application is given "points." As others have stated - you don't necessarily need prev law enforcement experience. A Masters will help - as will a degree as a CPA.

Military experience also helps - as does the ability to speak a foreign language.

In the 1990s, I had been told that the FBI were really looking for people with degrees in other things besides criminal justice.

No. You'll have to go through their training academy anyway, so don't waste your time at a police academy. Get a Bachelor's Degree and then apply. :-)

No, but a lot depends on your background and on the position you want to apply for. Go to www.fbi.gov or www.cia.gov and look for the links for careers and opportunities.

No. The FBI usually hires attorneys or accountants with CPA's.
The CIA has an assortment of jobs and almost none require police work.
