I know for a fact some of the bigger churches do that. My mother and father-in-law belong to a huge Baptist church that they have been members of all their lives practically. They show their tax returns and pay at least 10% of all their earnings. A few years ago he sold some land for quite a bit of money and wrote the church a check the next day for something like 25,000 dollars. Now with the economy slowing down they are out of money. The church certainly is not giving them any money to help them out.
Also a guy that my husband works with said his church does the same thing.
Jesus said "you received free, give free. How many churches are free? I think it should be a concious thing. If you what to give money then do so, if not don't.

If you are ever in a situation where they ask for your financial information, RUN QUICKLY. That is not how God operates!

Catholic Churches do NOT do this. It's not the place of the Church, ANY church, to calculate how much tithing you can afford. It's the sole discretion of the person.

I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Was financial Clerk for a ward of that institution and can assure you that is not the case with our church. In fact, the plate is not passed. Paying tithes is done behind the scenes not out front. No financial information is ever asked for.

Yeah - I find that ridiculous. I also find it ridiculous that so many churches charge monthly membership fees. It should never cost you money to practice your religion - just my two cents.

That doesn't sound like a very godly establishment. You don't have to pay to go to church. Any church that requires it is after something other than your saving your soul.

Well... I've not had that done to join, but when I was LDS (mormon) at the end of the year the Bishop (pastor) would ask to see proof of income to verify you had paid 10 percent of your gross income before issuing a Temple Recommend.
They didn't do that the first year, only after you'd been attending the temple for a year. It was very offensive to me.
