While viewing this piece of original art, here are some things to think about. What type of atmosphere or mood is revealed? What type of person would this lion represent? Is the style too detailed or not enough? Are the colours appropriate? How does this painting make you feel? Would you or do you know someone who would hang this painting in their home? etc. Thank you so much for all your comments! They are much appreciated! Click here to view my artwork!

i believe I observed this in the Hague while i strengthen into there some years in the past. What i strengthen into questioning is why is she wearing a turban in a Dutch portray? And no, i did no longer see the action picture. My form of action picture is extra like the place people get killed and stuff gets blown up. with the aid of fact of this I have no ability with poetry, till is it suggested with a weapon. i think of somebody suggested this above, yet I merely skimmed by way of them in view that there have been this style of great form of thumbs down. It reminds most of the Mona Lisa. of direction the history is way less complicated, so which you get to pay interest extra on the lady. (and she or he ain't as gruesome as "Mona" is the two!) Poem seems to be a great description of the portray. i'm going to guess it would have helped to work out the action picture. (The back, as I suggested till now, no longer my form.)

I don't know much about art, but I know what I like and I really like this. I like the blue swirly effect and the lion does look majestic.
I would hang this in my home. Or I would love to have it on a 4x6 art card.
keep trying and don't let anyone get you down. You have lots of talent.
good luck

Personally, I happen to love the swirling sky and don't think it competes with the portrait of the lion. Instead, I feel it augments the whole feel, the whole tone of the painting. The swirls seem to imply a continuation of the pattern of swirls naturally made by the hair on the lion's main.

I also don't see the lion's face as flat. I think it's just fine as is. However, I think you need to show at least the tip of the ear on the other side of his head to add more balance to the angle of his portrait. And you do have a little problem with the perspective on the tapering off of his nose on the right side of the painting. The shadow (opening) under the lid of skin on the right side (from our point of view) should be better highlighted to show there is the second nostril there.

All in all, it's a pretty good painting.

agree with John JR, the background is kinda competing with the lion .... it should be more laid back ....

Hi,

An artist never stops improving, so it's only natural that your work will get better as the time passes.
I do think that you did really well on this one.
Since I'm not an expert on animal portraits - in fact I'm not an expert on any kind of portraits - I won't critique it technically.
Your work is quite good.

Kind regards,

José

It is obvious that you have good drawing skills and the ability to capture detail and to relate details to one another. As a graphic illustration, this is a moderately successful piece. It is highly detailed and realistic. It is a straightforward documentation of what a lion looks like from the neck up. It has some minor problems noted by other people: a lack of depth, flatness, and some perspective problems. I think the mane is much too flat and geometric. It looks like a wig in a fashion magazine. There is absolutely no shadow or modeling in this piece. It's like an etching with paint: all line work with the hair used as a tool to define contour and shape. The background is way too distracting.
As a painting, this piece is only marginal. It evokes no emotion, and shows no real sophistication of feeling, brushwork, color or style. I can't answer any of the questions you pose, because the painting doesn't make me think of anything. It's like looking at a well drawn cereal box. Go back and look at how the great masters have done the lion. There are many many examples that I can think of right off the bat. Rubens, Delacroix, Rousseau, Picasso, David, Rembrandt, etc. The key to mastering painting is to focus on what you want to say and to say it thusly with maximum power and effectiveness. This painting says only what a dictionary would say. Nothing more. But, all that aside, I think you've gotten a good start on understanding the lion. You should do many many more of them in many styles and mediums. You are a very good artist with above average drawing ability.... and that is 99 percent of what it takes. Blessings.

It Sucks!
no really, it's pretty good. It looks like you used acrilyc. You did an exellent job on doing the fur and mane, hair isn't easy to draw nor paint. The lion is usually a represention of courage, nobility and strenght. The pose of the animal is well presented my only problem is the lower part of the body, at the bottom of the painting where the mane ends. I'm not sure if that's the body or part of the leg it doesn't look right. The color blue is a cool color, it's a calm tranquil color. With a bit of the swirls you are adding a bit of movement and excitement but in a ver subtle manner. All together it strikes me as a representaion of admiration and nobility, it is a calm painting, the kind of painting you enjoy looking at by yourself.
You could further add more shade on the bottom part of the painting to place more emphasis on the head, and you can also still make it a bit more realistic by playing with the light. This is up to you, i think it looks fine as it is.

It looks great! The back round is really good just tone down the light part in it. Then it will be perfect. Nice work!

Looks pretty good. The anatomy seems a be a little skewed, i.e. the face looks a little flat. Also the background is way too busy. It competes with the center of interest. Try playing everything down a little except one particular part of the animal, such as the eyes. You appear to have good skills.
